灌木或小乔木,落叶或常绿,常被簇状毛,茎干有皮孔。冬芽裸露或有鳞片。单叶,对生,稀3枚轮生,全缘或有锯齿或牙齿,有时掌状分裂,有柄;托叶通常微小,或不存在。花小,两性,整齐;花序由聚伞合成顶生或侧生的伞形式、圆锥式或伞房式,很少紧缩成簇状,有时具白色大型的不孕边花或全部由大型不孕花组成;苞片和小苞片通常微小而早落;萼齿5,宿存;花冠白色,较少淡红色,辐状、钟状、漏斗状或高脚碟状,裂片5枚,通常开展,很少直立,蕾时覆瓦状排列;雄蕊5枚,着生于花冠筒内,与花冠裂片互生,花药内向,宽椭圆形或近圆形;子房1室,花柱粗短,柱头头状或浅 (2-) 3裂;胚珠1颗,自子房顶端下垂。果实为核果,卵圆形或圆形,冠以宿存的萼齿和花柱;核扁平,较少圆形,骨质,有背、腹沟或无沟,内含1颗种子;胚直,胚乳坚实,硬肉质或嚼烂状。
全世界约有200种,分布于温带和亚热带地区;亚洲和南美洲种类较多。我国约有74种,广泛分布于全国各省区,以西南部种类最多。
