约500余种,主要分布于亚洲热带,少数在大洋洲和非洲。我国约有72种,多见于广东、广西和云南。其中洋蒲桃S. samarangense (Blume) Merr. et Perry常栽培供公用;另有引种的丁子香S. aromaticum (Linn.) Merr. et Perry,花蕾供医药及化学工业用;还有多花蒲桃S. polyanthum (Wight) Walp.供观赏。
