Shrubs to 2.5 m tall. Branchlets becoming purple-gray; buds glabrous or slightly pubescent at apex. Stipules ovate-lanceolate to long elliptic, ca. 5 mm, margin sparsely toothed, ciliate; petiole 2–5 mm, pubescent; leaf blade ovate to triangular-ovate, 2–4 × 1.5–2.5 cm, abaxially sparsely pubescent, densely on veins, adaxially pubescent, base cordate or truncate, margin doubly serrate, with 4 or 5 pairs of lobes reaching ca. 1/3 way to midvein, apex acuminate. Panicle lax, 2–6 cm in diam.; peduncle and pedicels pubescent; bracts lanceolate, apex obtuse or acute. Flowers 4–5 mm in diam.; pedicel 5–8 mm. Hypanthium sparsely pubescent. Sepals erect or spreading in fruit, triangular to oblong, ca. 2 mm, margin minutely serrate, apex obtuse. Petals obovate, 2–3 mm, apex obtuse. Stamens ca. 10, shorter than petals. Follicle 2–3 mm in diam., pilose, later pubescent. Seed 1, ovoid. Fl. Jun–Jul, fr. Aug–Sep.
Mountain slopes, often by streams; 500--1000 m. Liaoning (Changhai, Xiuyan), E Shandong (Mouping, Qingdao), Taiwan (Hualiangam) [Japan, Korea].

灌木,高达2.5米;小枝细弱,弯曲,圆柱形,微被柔毛,幼时红褐色,老时紫灰色;冬芽卵形,先端圆钝,无毛或顶端微具柔毛,红褐色。叶片卵形至三角卵形,长2-4厘米,宽1.5-2.5厘米,先端渐尖或尾尖,基部心形或截形,边缘常深裂,有4-5对裂片及重锯齿,上面具稀疏柔毛,下面微被柔毛沿叶脉较密,侧脉5-7对,下面显著;叶柄长3-8毫米,被柔毛;托叶卵状披针形至长椭圆形,先端急尖,微有锯齿及睫毛,长约5毫米。顶生疏松的圆锥花序,长2-6厘米,具花多朵,花梗长5-8毫米,总花梗与花梗均被柔毛;苞片小,披针形;花直径约5毫米;萼筒浅杯状,内外两面微被柔毛;萼片三角形至长圆形,先端钝,边缘有细锯齿,长约2毫米;花瓣倒卵形,先端钝,白色;雄蕊10,短于花瓣,着生在萼筒边缘;心皮1,花柱顶生,直立,子房被柔毛。蓇葖果近球形,直径2-3毫米,外被柔毛,具宿存直立或开展的萼片。花期6-7月,果期8-9月。
产辽宁(岫岩、长海)、山东(牟平、青岛)、台湾(花莲港)。生于山坡或沟边,海拔500-1000米。朝鲜、日本也有分布。
本种与华空木 S. chinensis Hance 极为近似,惟本种的叶形较小,叶片分裂较深,花梗与萼筒常有柔毛,可以区别。
