本属的选模式种:红茶藨子 R. rubrum Linn.
此属全球有160余种,主要分布于北半球温带和较寒冷地区,少数种类延伸到亚热带和热带山地,直至南美洲的南端。非洲仅于西北部的阿特拉斯山区有2种,大洋洲无分布。我国产59种30变种,隶属于4亚属10组15系,主产西南部、西北部至东北部。
各国学者对茶藨子属的分类位置长期以来均有争议,Bentham & Hooker J. D. (1865), Engler (1891, 1930), Schneider (1905), Janczewski (1907), Rehder (1927), Pojarkova (1939), Melchior (1964) 、和Krussamann (1978) 等把此属置于虎耳草科 Saxifragaceae 内。另一些植物学家,如 Hutchinson (1959, 1967), Takhtajan (1959, 1987) 等都把该属独立为 Grossulariaceae 或 Ribesiaceae,置于 Saxifragales 中。Cronquist (1981,1988) 不仅赞成独立成科,并且扩大了科的概念,进而把 Grossulariaceae和 Escalloniaceae 及其它两个小科合并,而置于 Rosales 中。近代一些学者,对茶藨子属进行了化学分类、花粉形态和种子蛋白血清学研究,但对该属的分类位置尚未取得一致的结论。据外部形态和花粉性状的研究,我们支持把它置于虎耳草科的观点。
对属下类群的划分也因人而异,Janczewski (1907) 在“Monographie des Groseilliers (Ribes Linn.)”中,把全球茶藨子属划分为6亚属15组,即1. 茶藨子亚属 Subgen. Ribes =Subgen. Ribesia (Berl.) Jancz.; 2. 臭茶藨子亚属 Subgen. Coreosma (Spach) Jancz. (含7组);3. 密刺亚属 Subgen. Grossularioides Jancz.; 4. 醋栗亚属 Subgen. Grossularia (Mill.) A. Rich. (含2组);5.伞花亚属 Subgen. Parilla Jancz.(含3组); 6.单性花亚属 Subgen. Berisia (Spach) Jancz.(含3组)。Rehder (1927) 和 Krussamann (1978) 把此属植物隶属于4亚属15组,他们对属下等级的划分和 Janczewski 的区别在于把上述臭茶藨子亚属归并入茶藨子亚属,将伞花亚属并入单性花亚属,组的数目虽相同,但范围有改动。此外,在分类系统排列上,Rehder 等把较进化的单性花类群列在最前,而较原始的两性花类群则被置于后面,这样处理并非从进化论的观点出发。
Pojarkova (1939) 在“Flora USSR Vol. 9”把原苏联茶藨子属划分为5亚属14系,依次为1.茶藨子亚属 Subgen. Ribes (含5系);2. Subgen. Heritiera Jancz. (pro sect.);3. 密刺亚属 Subgen. Grossularioides Jancz.; 4. Subgen. Eucoreosma Jancz. (pro sect. 含4系);5. 单性花亚属 Subgen. Berisia (Spach) Jancz.(含5系)。她的分类法和上述学者们的区别在于把醋栗亚属 Subgen. Grossularia (Mill.) A. Rich. 重新恢复为独立属,即 Grossularia Mill., 其次,把 Subgen. Coreosma (Spach) Jancz. 中的 Sect. Heritiera Jancz. 和 Sect. Eucoreosma Jancz. 都提升为亚属,在亚属内不设组而建立系等级。
综上所述,对茶藨子属分类位置和属下等级划分的争论由来已久,据外部形态和部分花粉资料的分析研究,我们赞同把茶藨子属置于虎耳草科内。属下等级的划分采纳Rehder系统中所划分的4个亚属,但不采用他的系统排列顺序,而按类群的亲缘关系,对亚属、组和系的划分、分类类目的内容、系统排列等方面都作了较大修正。另外,从系统发育的观点出发,作者对亚属的排列次序则和Rehder系统的顺序完全相反,对组和系的范围和系统位置作了较大改动。
此属植物具有较高的经济价值,果实富含各种维生素、糖类和有机酸等,可供生食及制作果酒、饮料、糖果和果酱等,也可作提取维生素的原料。某些种的根和种子供药用。枝、叶繁茂,春季着花满枝,秋季结实累累,是良好的绿化观赏植物。
该属植物喜温和气候,但耐寒冷和干旱。繁殖用种子、分根、插条和压条等,栽植容易,管理省工。在欧美各国已久经栽培,培育出许多商用品种。近年来在我国东北地区已引种栽培,有些种类的果实成为制作饮料和糖果等的重要原料,某些种已作为东北和华北地区的观赏植物。在我国东北、西北和西南地区有大量野生资源,尚未开发利用。
