常绿攀援灌木,嫩枝几无毛,稀具星状毛。花枝上的叶片披针形至卵状披针形,或近于菱形至卵形,歪斜,先端渐尖,基部楔形至阔楔形,上面亮绿色,下面淡绿色,侧脉两面均明显,网脉上面较明显;叶柄长1-5.5厘米,几无毛。伞形花序近于伞房状排列;总花梗细长,长1-1.5厘米,有星状毛;花梗长6-8毫米,有星状毛;萼筒短,倒圆锥形,密生星状毛,长1毫米;花瓣卵形,长2--2.5毫米,开花时略反卷,外面有星状毛,内面中部以上有隆起的脊;雄蕊5,花丝长2毫米;子房5室,花盘短圆锥形;花柱合生成柱状,长1毫米,柱头有不明显的5裂。果实黑色。花期11月。
我国台湾特产。多生于山间,海拔800-2500米。仅见具果实老枝的标本,未见不育枝上的叶片。
本变种与菱叶常春藤(原变种)的区别在于原变种不育枝的叶片掌状3浅裂;与常春藤的区别在于本变种具星状毛而非鳞片,花较小,果实黑色。
我国南方庭园中偶有栽培供观赏的洋常春藤Hedera helix Linn.,此种植物的特点在于植株幼嫩部分和花序具星状毛而非鳞片,不育枝上的叶片每侧有2-5个裂片或牙齿,花枝上的叶片狭卵形,基部楔形至截形,果实黑色。由于长期栽培,有许多变种和品种。
