藤本植物，攀援极高，具鞭状分枝。茎圆柱形，粗壮，下部粗2.5-4厘米；根平伸，紧贴，与茎或枝垂直，具发达的皮孔。大叶的叶柄长28-40厘米，关节长2.25厘米，叶柄鞘膜质，上升达关节，逐渐撕裂，脱落；叶片薄革质；幼叶狭披针形或披针状长圆形，基部浅心形，具稀疏或密集的点状小孔，上部叶整个叶片上有星散的，有时密集的穿孔，成熟植株的叶宽的长圆形，基部宽心形，沿中肋有星散的小孔，有时为长达2毫米的穿孔，叶片长45-60厘米，宽30-40厘米，两侧不等地羽状深裂或羽裂，裂片线形，基部和顶端等宽或顶端稍宽，基部大都联合较长，间隔（裂弯）宽5-7.5厘米，狭长渐尖，裂片上有Ⅰ级侧脉1-3，从中肋伸出，Ⅱ级侧脉与Ⅰ级侧脉成极小锐角，逐渐与之平行。花序柄圆柱形，粗壮，长10-14厘米，多少围以苞片（鳞叶），后者具撕裂状的鞘。佛焰苞10-12厘米，长渐尖，外面绿色，内面黄色，长10—12厘米，渐尖。肉穗花序无梗，圆柱形，钝，长约10厘米，径3厘米。雌蕊具棱，长5—6毫米，截平，柱头无柄，线形，纵向；胚珠1-3，着生于胎座的近基部。种子肾形，稍光滑。小枝鞭状，长，节间长；15—20厘米，较下部的粗1-1.5厘米，常悬垂；鳞叶长7—8厘米，具长5—6厘米的狭披针形叶片；叶片与叶柄近等长，披针形或披针状长圆形，渐尖。花期4—5月。
产滇南、广西（博白）、广东，台湾也有，生长于热带雨林中大树上或岩壁上，福建厦门及各热带公园常栽培供观赏。分布于印度，马来西亚至菲律宾，太平洋诸岛和大洋洲诸岛。

Mature stem 5-40 mm in diam., internodes separated by prominent leaf scars, obscured by sheath fibers, active stems lustrous green with prominent irregular longitudinal whitish crests.
