乔木或灌木;无顶芽,芽鳞少数。叶互生,稀对生。花单性异株,很少杂性,组成腋生于当年生枝条上或较少在老枝上侧生的聚伞花序,有时单生;花4—5基数;萼通常深裂,顶端有时平截,雌花的萼常较雄花的大,结果时常增大;花冠浅裂或深裂,裂片向右旋转排列,很少覆瓦状排列;雄花:雄蕊4—16至多数,通常16,子房不发育;雌花:退化雄蕊1—16或不存在,子房2—16室,花柱2—8枚,分离或基部合生,通常顶端2裂;胚珠每室1颗。浆果肉质,基部通常有增大的宿存萼;种子通常两侧压扁。400—500种,产全世界的热带地区,个别种延至温带。我国有58种,7变种,主要分布西南至东南部,广东最多,云南其次,广西再次之。本属植物的树皮和未成熟的果实富含单宁,通常用果提制柿漆,用以作涂料。木材质硬而重,结构细,颜色有灰黑、黑色或灰白色等,一般颜色较深的则耐水湿,不易割裂,宜作建筑、枕木及雕刻用材如乌材等;用乌材制成的木筷,就是著名的“乌木筷”;颜色较浅的木材,虽不耐水湿,但不拆裂,可供作家具及建筑用材。有些种类的果可食及药用。
