草本、亚灌木或灌木。叶为羽状三出复叶或退化为单小叶;具托叶和小托叶,托叶通常干膜质,有条纹,小托叶钻形或丝状;小叶全缘或浅波状。花通常较小;组成腋生或顶生的总状花序或圆锥花序,小为单生或成对生于叶腋;苞片宿存或早落,小苞片有或缺;花萼钟状,4-5裂,裂片较萼筒长或短,上部裂片全缘或先端2裂至微裂;花冠白色、绿白、黄白、粉红、紫色、紫堇色,旗瓣椭圆形、宽椭圆形、倒卵形、宽倒卵形至近圆形,翼瓣多少与龙骨瓣贴连,均有瓣柄;雄蕊二体(9+1)或少有单体;子房通常无柄,有胚珠数颗。荚果扁平,不开裂,背腹两缝线稍缢缩或腹缝线劲直;荚节数枚。子叶出土萌发。
约350种,多分布于亚热带和热带地区。我国有27种5变种,大部分布于西南经中南部至东南部,仅1种产陕、甘西南部。
有些种类供药用。
