常绿乔木。叶革质或薄革质,边缘有锯齿或全缘。雄花序为下垂葇荑花序。花结构与栎属相似,雌花单生或簇生,花柱3—6。壳斗多为碗形或盘形,包着坚果一部分,少有全色;苞片合生成同心环带,排列疏松或紧密,环带全缘或有缺齿。坚果单生,果皮内壁有毛,不发育的胚珠位于种仁外侧之顶端,种子当年或翌年成熟。本属约150种,我国约有70种,分布秦岭及淮河流域以南各省。云南有30多种,现记载31种,多为组成常绿阔叶林主要树种,有时组成纯林。木材为辐射孔材,红褐色或黄褐色,材质重至甚重,硬至甚硬,强度甚强,收缩性小,耐腐,供横档木、桩柱、车船、桥梁、工具柄、地板、木制机械、刨架、枕木及运动器械等用材。壳斗含单宁较少,种子含淀粉56—60%,供饲料或酿酒用。

常绿乔木,稀灌木,树皮通常平滑,稀深裂。冬芽芽鳞多数,覆瓦状排列。叶螺旋状互生,全缘或有锯齿,羽状脉。花单性,雌雄同株;雄花序为下垂柔荑花序,雄花单朵散生或数朵簇生于花序轴,花被通常5-6深裂,雄蕊与花被裂片同数,有时较少,花丝细长,花药2室,退化雌蕊细小;雌花单生或排成穗状,雌花单生于总苞内,花被具5-6裂片,有时有细小的退化雄蕊,子房3室,每室有2胚珠,花柱2-4,通常3。果实成熟时发育的总苞称为壳斗,壳斗呈碟形、杯形、碗形、钟形,包着坚果一部分至大部分,稀全包,壳斗上的小苞片轮状排列,愈合成为同心环带,环带全缘或具裂齿,每一壳斗内通常只有一个坚果。坚果当年成熟或翌年成熟,近球形至椭圆形,顶端有突起的柱座,底部圆形疤痕为果脐,不孕胚珠位于种子的近顶部。种子具肉质子叶,富含淀粉,发芽时子叶不出土。染色体2n=24。
本属有150种,主要分布在亚洲热带、亚热带,我国有77种及3变种,分布秦岭、淮河流域以南各省区,为组成常绿阔叶林的主要树种之一。
木材为辐射孔材,红褐色、黄褐色或灰白色,材质重至甚重,硬至甚硬,强度甚强,收缩性大,耐腐力强,可作桩柱、车辆、桥梁、工具柄、木机械、刨架、运动器械、枕木等用材;壳斗、树皮富含单宁,可提制栲胶;种子富含淀粉可供作饲料、酿酒和工业用淀粉。
