多年生草本，少二年生草本，自基部或自上部分枝。头状花序同形，舌状，含舌状小花5-13枚，少数，集生于枝端。总苞狭圆柱状；总苞片2-3层，不呈覆瓦状排列，外层极小，内层长，近等长，边缘膜质，外面被蛛丝状柔毛或近无毛，有时沿中脉有刚毛。花托平，无托毛。舌状花黄色，舌片顶端5齿裂。花柱分枝细长. 被稠密的乳突；花药基部附属物极短，全缘或撕裂。瘦果近圆柱状，有5条高起的纵肋，肋间有纵沟，上部或有自中部疣状或鳞片状突起，先端但在喙基部周围有5个全缘或3浅裂的膜质鳞片组成的齿冠，极少无齿冠。顶端有细喙，喙细丝状，或喙短粗，喙基部或基部以上有关节，在关节处，喙与冠毛一起脱落，或喙无关节，而喙不规则断裂。冠毛2-4层，白色，等长，单毛状或糙毛状。
约30种，主要分布中亚、北亚和欧洲。我国有9种，主要分布新疆。
