落叶灌木或小乔木;小枝纤细,圆柱状。叶鳞片状,互生,无柄,无托叶。花小,白色或淡红色,无梗或具短梗,组成侧生或顶生的总状花序或圆锥花序。花两性,稀单性;苞片1枚;萼片与花瓣同数;雄蕊4—5枚,与萼裂片对生,花丝分离,花药心形,2室,纵裂;子房上位,1室,基部围绕多少分裂的花盘;花柱2—4,顶端扩大,胚珠多数,蒴果圆锥形,室背三瓣裂。种子多数,细小,顶端芒柱有毛。约50种,主产欧洲西部、地中海地区至印度。我国有18种,全国各地均有分布。云南有1种。
2.柽柳属——Tamarix Linn.

灌木或乔木,多分枝,幼枝无毛(仅个别种被毛);枝条有两种;一种是木质化的生长枝,经冬不落,一种是绿色营养小枝,冬天脱落。叶小,鳞片状,互生,无柄,抱茎或呈鞘状,无毛,稀被毛,多具泌盐腺体;无托叶。花集成总状花序或圆锥花序,春季开花,总状花序侧生在去年生的生长枝上,或在当年生的生长枝上,集成顶生圆锥花序,或有的种两种开花习性兼而有之。花两性,稀单性(我国不产),4.5(-6)数,通常具花梗;苞片1枚。花萼草质或肉质,深4-5裂,宿存,裂片全缘或微具细牙齿;花瓣与花萼裂片同数,花后脱落或宿存;花盘有多种形状,多为4-5裂,裂片全缘或顶端凹缺以至深裂,花丝生裂片间,或主裂片各分裂为2,两侧的细裂片与相邻的花丝相贴生,花丝呈顶生于花盘裂片顶上(假顶生) 、至花丝与两侧的细裂片相融合 (融生) ;雄蕊4-5,单轮,与花萼裂片对生,或为多数 (我国不产) ,外轮与花萼裂片对生,花丝常分离,着生在花盘裂片间或裂片顶端(假顶生或融生) ,花药心形,丁字着药,2室,纵裂;雌蕊1,由3-4心皮构成,子房上位,多呈圆锥形,1室,胚珠多数,基底-侧膜胎座,花柱3-4,柱头短,头状。蒴果圆锥形,室背三瓣裂。种子多数,细小,顶端的芒柱从基部起即具发白色的单细胞长柔毛。
约90种。主要分布于亚洲大陆和北非,部分地分布于欧洲的干旱和半干旱区域,沿盐碱化河岸滩地到森林地带,间断分布于南非西海岸。大约分布在西经10°到东经145°,北半球北纬50°到20°,南半球高纬55°到12° (非洲) 。我国约产18种1变种,主要分布于西北、内蒙古及华北。
本属植物抗旱、抗盐、抗热、喜砂、喜水,主要生长在干旱、半干旱地区的冲积、淤积盐碱化平原和滩地上。大多数种类生长在平原上,少数种类可生长在山区 (天山1200-2000米) ,见于沿河和泉水露头的地方。
