Shrubs 3–6 m tall. Branches purplish brown, glabrous, lustrous; branchlets of first year’s growth yellowish brown, brown pubescent, glabrescent. Winter buds purplish brown, ovoid; scales to 2 × 1 cm, outside brown pubescent but glabrescent, margin basally glandular serrate. Stipules linear to lanceolate, 1–1.3 cm, herbaceous, margin basally glandular serrate and apically entire, apex acuminate. Petiole 2–7 mm, densely brown villous; leaf blade oblong to elliptic, 5–11 × 2.5–5 cm, abaxially yellowish green and densely brown pubescent on midvein and secondary veins, adaxially dull green and glabrous, base subrotund to broadly cuneate, margin biserrate or sometimes incised serrate, apex acute, acuminate, or shortly caudate; secondary veins 12–20 on either side of midvein. Racemes 3–5 cm; peduncle densely brown pubescent; bracts lanceolate to ovate-lanceolate, membranous, margin entire or indistinctly shallowly serrate. Bisexual flowers 2–4 mm in diam. Pedicel ca. 2 mm, to 3 mm in fruit, densely brown pubescent. Hypanthium outside pubescent. Perianth segments ovate, soon caducous, outside and inside pubescent, margin entire, apex acute. Stamens many. Ovary glabrous. Style slender, longer than stamens; stigma oblique. Drupe purple, ovoid, ca. 8 mm in diam., glabrous. Fl. Apr–May, fr. Jun. 2n = 32*.

落叶灌木，高3-6米；多年生枝条紫褐色，无毛，有光泽，当年生小枝黄褐色，被棕褐色柔毛，逐渐脱落；冬芽卵圆形，紫红色，有数枚覆瓦状排列鳞片，鳞片外面被棕褐色柔毛，有时鳞片随植物本身生长亦长大，长可达2厘米，宽可达1厘米，边缘基部有带腺体锯齿，外面无毛，宿存或很晚脱落。叶片长圆形或椭圆形，长5-11厘米，宽2.5-5厘米（花枝的叶片较小），先端急尖、渐尖或短尾尖，基部近圆形或宽楔形，叶边有重锯齿，或常混有缺刻状锯齿，齿呈三角形，先端渐尖，上面深绿色，无毛，下面黄绿色，沿主脉和侧脉密被柔毛或棕褐色柔毛，其余部分无毛，侧脉12-20对，中脉和侧脉明显突起；叶柄长约2-7毫米，密被棕褐色长柔毛；托叶草质，稀膜质，线形或披针形，长1-1.3厘米，先端渐尖，上半部全缘，下半部有带腺锯齿，很迟脱落。总状花序，长3-5厘米，生于侧枝顶端；花梗长约2毫米，总花梗和花梗密被棕褐色短柔毛；苞片膜质，披针形或卵状披针形，长可达4毫米，先端急尖，全缘或有不明显浅齿，有毛，脱落很迟；萼筒钟状，外面有柔毛，内面无毛；萼片小，10-12，卵形，先端急尖，全缘，内、外两面被柔毛，比萼筒短2-3倍；无花瓣；两性花：雄蕊多数，排成紧密不规则2轮，着生在萼筒口部，雌蕊1，心皮无毛，柱头偏斜，花柱细长，伸出雄蕊之外，比雄蕊长1/3或稍长。核果卵球形，直径约8毫米，先端有花柱基部宿存，紫黑色，无毛；果梗短粗，3-5毫米，被棕褐色柔毛；萼片脱落；核卵形，略尖，有突起，易碎。2n=32。
产四川。生于阴山谷或灌丛中，海拔2400-3060米。模式标本采自康定。
本种和臭樱 M. hypoleuca Koehno相近似，惟本种叶片下面沿中脉和侧脉被柔毛，黄绿色，不带白霜，小枝被棕褐色柔毛；托叶不反折，可以区别。
