草本或亚灌木，具腺毛及柔毛。叶互生，三裂或二至三回全裂，裂片条形；托叶膜质，贴生于叶柄。花茎直立，纤细；花小，成聚伞、伞房或圆锥花序，少有单生；花萼宿存，萼筒钟形、筒形或倒圆锥形，萼片5，直立；花瓣5，白色或紫色；雄蕊5，和花瓣对生；花盘围绕萼筒基部，边缘肥厚，具长刚毛；心皮4-10或更多，花柱基生，脱落，柱头头状，胚珠1个，着生在子房基部。瘦果卵形，无毛，包裹在宿存花萼内；种子直立。
本属的模式种：阿尔泰地蔷薇Chamaerhodos altaica（Laxm.）Bge.
约8种，分布于亚洲和北美。我国产5种。
