一年生至多年生草本，植株具单毛，腺毛或近无毛。茎直立或近直立至开展，多数从基部分枝或茎短缩。叶片羽状深裂或具浅齿，具柄，茎上部的叶近无柄，多数在基部簇生。总状花序在果轴上疏展或为具单花的花葶；萼片直立，内轮2枚基部呈囊状；花瓣紫色、紫红色或黄色，有时带白色，顶端微凹或钝圆，基部具长爪；雄蕊6，花丝无附属物；侧蜜腺圆锥形或半环状，中蜜腺缺。长角果近圆柱形，种子间收缩呈念珠状或具横节，通常断裂，稀有不整齐开裂，顶端具喙。种子每室1行，种子椭圆形，无膜质边缘；子叶缘倚胚根。
本属约10种，主产于亚洲（包括苏联的亚洲部分、巴基斯坦、阿富汗、伊朗），欧洲东南部也有分布。我国有5种。
本属模式种：离子芥 Chorispora tenella (Pall.) DC.
