附生植物。根状茎横走，木质，密被鳞片；鳞片卵状披针形或披针形，红棕色，质薄但坚硬，不透明，盾状着生。叶近生或远生，一型或近生二型；叶柄基部以关节着生在根状茎上；叶片单叶不分裂，卵形，边缘全缘；不育叶较宽，能育叶较狭。侧脉粗壮明显，小脉网状，不明显，具内藏小脉。叶革质，两面光滑无毛。孢子囊群长条形，位于相邻的两侧脉之间，连续或有间断。孢子囊的环带由14个细胞组成。孢子椭圆形，无周壁，外壁薄，常褶皱，具明显的刺状纹饰和不明显的颗粒状纹饰。染色体基数x=37。
本属约有15种，分布于亚洲热带、太平洋岛屿、澳大利亚、南非和马达加斯加。中国有1种，产广东。
